How it all began

Harlequins Musical Drama Society was formed in 1988.  There had been a previous group at Millfield Community Centre called "Millfield Dramarama" who had been running for four years with our Director, Christine Wenden, as their Director. Millfield Dramarama folded and some of the members decided to set up a new group and Harlequins was born!

Harlequins was set up as a community musical drama group to give the opportunity for people in the community to get involved in the theatre regardless of talent or experience.  It has continued to be a community group for people to get involved with and the performances have entertained both the local community of Peterborough and further afield.

In the beginning..

In the early days, Harlequins mainly performed musical variety shows and pantomimes.  The musical variety shows have included various songs from all the musicals including Les Miserables, Carousel, My Fair Lady, Miss Saigon, Grease, Oklahoma, Annie get your gun, Martin Guerre and many many more.

Our pantomimes are written and adapted by our producer and Director, Christine Wenden and have been very well received by audiences who have come to see them.  We have even had reviews that they were funnier and more entertaining than some professional pantomimes that they have seen.

Nice to give back..

We have performed various charity shows, mainly musical variety shows, where the proceeds from the shows have gone to specific local charities such as the Peterborough Special Care Baby Unit.

Time for a challenge

In 1995 we moved on to something more challenging and performed our first full musical "The Sound of Music".  We have since performed other musicals such as The King and I, Me and My Girl and Barnum.

Where do we perform?

We started off performing at Millfield Community Centre on Lincoln Road and have continued to perform the majority of our performances at this venue.  We have also performed at other community centres and schools around Peterborough when we have taken our performances on tour.

We have performed at the South Holland Theatre in Spalding, the Key Theatre in Peterborough and we also performed one of our shows at the Broadway in Peterborough, where we shared the stage with the Hollywood actor, Warwick Davis.
